Weekend Getaway to Pilot Cove Cabins – Pisgah National Forest

Pisgah National Forest

Lodging at Pilot Cove

My husband and I decided last minute that we wanted to go on a quick weekend getaway, and we had a few requirements. (1) dog friendly, (2) mountains, (3) good food and drink options! Pisgah National Forest was a no-brainer, and easily checked all three boxes!

This destination is always perfect for us – for one, it is only a few hours drive from Southern Pines, NC. Second, we can take our dogs with us, stay in a dog-friendly cabin, and hike through North Carolina’s beautiful mountains!

Pisgah National Forest has great hiking opportunities, and surrounding towns (Asheville and Brevard), are sure to give us that perfect mountain-brewery ratio. We just needed to find the ideal accommodation to match our beer-drinking, mountain-climbing, and dog-friendly itinerary!

That’s where Pilot Cove cabins in Brevard came in totally clutch! These dog-friendly cabins, located just outside the entrance of Pisgah National Forest, and just up the hill from the Pisgah Tavern and local food trucks, were perfect!

The Amenities Are Top-Notch

Pilot Cove offers 15 cabins on over 124 acres of land – and you can choose between a studio, one-bedroom, or two-bedroom cabin. The cabins have a large outdoor deck to soak up your surroundings, and are set up with built in hammock anchor points and a hammock! A kitchen, washer and dryer, and comfy living spaces allow for a fully relaxing getaway, and the perfect place to wind down a busy day of hiking or mountain biking through Pisgah.

Did I mention they have dog-friendly cabins! This is critical for us – it can be so challenging to find dog-friendly accommodations, even in some of the most dog-friendly destinations!

We brought all THREE of our pups with us – and they loved the space just as much as we did!

The grounds also have common picnic and grilling areas with fire pits, and an amphitheater for concerts and events. There are trails on the grounds, as well as a flow track for mountain bikers! The cabins are located just up the hill from The HUB and Pisgah Tavern (a local bike shop and a great place to grab a beer after putting in work).

We also had the best coffee we’ve had in a long time, at The Velvet Cup Coffee Truck parked in The HUB and Pisgah Tavern’s parking lot!

OK – so that’s dog-friendly cabin with a mountain view, mountains, beer, coffee, and bike rentals all in one location. Do I even need to continue?

Proximity to Pisgah and Asheville

I mentioned above that Pilot Cove is located at the boundary of Pisgah National Forest, which is incredibly convenient. Since we only had about 36 hours to spend on vacation, we wanted to make the most of it, and Pilot Cove set us up for success! First thing in the morning we took the dogs to hike up Looking Glass Rock Trail, one of the top-rated trails in Pisgah. It was about 6 miles of work, with a major payoff at the summit. The trail head was only about 10 minutes drive from our cabin!

After a great hike in beautiful weather, we took our muddy dogs back to the cabin. We washed up, ran laundry, cooked lunch, and we were off to Asheville!

Located only about 35 minutes away from our cabins, we made our way toward downtown Asheville for dinner. We realized that the Sierra Nevada Brewing Company was about half way between us and Asheville, so we stopped there on the way!

After a delicious dinner at Curate in Asheville, we made our way back to our cabin for wine and football!

What’s The Cost?

In short – it depends on the time of year, the size of the cabin, and whether your are staying on a week night or weekend night!

A studio cabin, during a week day, in the off season, can run you as little as $150 per night; while a two-bedroom cabin, during the weekend, during peak season, can run you as much as $349 per night.

The amenities, comforts, and proximity to both Pisgah National Forest, and Asheville, are all reasons I highly recommend staying at Pilot Cove. An extra perk – Brevard itself is super cute, and it’s downtown is home to art galleries, restaurants, and outdoors shops.

Disclaimer: Two nights accommodation was provided by Pilot Cove cabins, but no further compensation was given. These are my own thoughts and opinions on our time at Pilot Cove.
